While avoiding sugar completely is not a good health move. But cutting back on added sugars is always a good idea.

  • Avoid fruits canned in syrup, especially heavy syrup. Drain and rinse in a colander to remove excess syrup or juice.

  • Limit your purchase of processed foods. Everything you buy that comes in a box, bag, or can has added sugars.

  • Instead of adding sugar to cereal or oatmeal, try fresh fruit (bananas, cherries or strawberries) or dried fruits.

  • We all love flavored yogurt. These tempting yogurt has just as much sugar in most of a candy bar. Add fresh fruit/honey in your plain yogurt if you still need some flavor/sweetness.

  • Products on the market now that are labeled “sugar-free" may indeed be sugar-free, they may still contain a lot of fast-metabolizing carbohydrates.

  • Try adding cinnamon to coffee in place of sugar.

  • If you chocolate cravings then switch to dark chocolate. It’s has great health benefits, and you probably won’t be able to eat an entire bar of dark chocolate like you can milk chocolate.
